Christianity is an oriental religion. Swami Vivekananda says Christ is an Asian whose teachings could appeal to an Indian more than an American. When he was travelling between 1888 and 1893 all over the world he was carrying with him only two books, the Gita and The Imitations of Christ. He said yet another time “had I lived in Palestine in the days of Jesus of Nazareth I would have washed his feet not with tears but with my heart’s blood”. He never attended a church nor listened to the preacher yet he understood Christ more than the Christians do. So what is deficient in the Indian Christian church and its understanding of Christ? The answer is our church engages more with dogma and doctrines, theories and philosophies that were brought to us from Europe than with the person of Christ directly in the Indian way.
